What is intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a type of skin therapy that uses bursts of light of varying wavelengths to target problem areas and destroy damaged cells without harming surrounding tissue. What should I expect during an IPL session?

Before your treatment begins, your specialist will cover your eyes for protection from the intensely bright light and seat you in a comfortable position. The specialist then cleans the target area and applies a cool gel.

Once prepped, your specialist applies short bursts of light using a handheld IPL device. During the treatment, your skin may feel warm or like a bright light shining on your skin. The procedure takes about 20-30 minutes.

How long is recovery following IPL therapy?

After your IPL therapy, you may notice some redness or mild sunburn on your skin. This redness usually goes away after one day. Some freckles or age spots may appear darker for 3-7 days following the procedure. You can return to normal activities the same day of treatment. Follow your post-care instructions for best results.

How long do the results last?

Once you’ve completed your recommended treatments, the improvements to your skin can be long-lasting. You may want regular treatments several times a year to keep your skin looking the same.
