Obstetrics Q & A

What Is Obstetrics?

Obstetrics is the field of medicine that focuses on caring for pregnant women. The field includes care for women during pregnancy and delivery, as well as after delivery during the postpartum period.

Who Provides Obstetrical Care?

Physicians, Nurse-Midwives, and Nurse Practitioners are qualified to provide obstetrical care in the prenatal and postpartum periods.  Nurse-Midwives and physicians provide care in labor and delivery and midwives assist physicians in operative births.

Is Obstetrical Care Covered by Insurance?

Obstetrical care is covered by most health insurance plans. Precisely what is covered, however, varies from policy to policy, so pregnant women should contact their health insurer to see what obstetrical coverages their policy includes.

Obstetrical coverage provided by a woman’s health insurance will usually cover the delivery of a child, but it typically doesn’t include care for the newborn child. Newborns are usually covered by their own health insurance policies.

Who Needs Obstetrical Care?

Any woman who is pregnant or thinks she is pregnant should contact an Obstetrician or Midwife. After asking about a woman’s menstrual cycle and symptoms, a medical provider can determine whether it’s necessary to come in for obstetrical care and when the first appointment should be scheduled. Most healthcare insurance companies let women make appointments with their OB-GYNs and midwives, without a primary care physician’s referral, so women don’t need to wait until after they see their primary care provider before contacting an obstetrician.
