Gynecology Q & A

What Is Gynecology?

Gynecology is the field of medicine that focuses on women’s health issues. It primarily addresses health issues related to women’s reproductive systems, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina, and breasts. Many doctors who specialize in gynecology also specialize in obstetrics, which involves caring for pregnant women.

Who Offers Gynecologic Care?

Both doctors and nurses can provide gynecologic care. Doctors who specialize in the field are gynecologists, although they’re often referred to as “OB-GYNs” if they also offer obstetrical care.

Nurse practitioners and nurse midwives work with doctors to give women the complete care they need. Nurse practitioners and midwives can perform the vast majority of services usually provided by a physician.

Who Should Go to a Gynecologist?

All women should have a gynecologist whom they see regularly. Women’s reproductive systems can develop health issues at any stage of life regardless of whether women are sexually active. Gynecologists are the most qualified doctors to diagnose and treat these issues. They also can serve as an obstetrician  when a woman becomes pregnant.

What Is a Gynecologic Appointment Like?

A gynecologic appointment is a lot like any other medical appointment. It typically begins with some paperwork, and then vital signs and a medical history are taken. After these initial items are completed, the health care specialist will sit down with the patient and ask a few questions. They’ll also usually perform an exam. If any specific issue is being addressed during the appointment, the provider will discuss it with the patient. Of course, the patient is allowed to ask any questions that they have.

At the end of the appointment, the provider will recommend any necessary medical treatment. This may include scheduling a procedure or writing a prescription. Another appointment, either a follow-up or a future check-up, is usually scheduled once the appointment is over.
