In-Office Permanent Birth Control Q & A

What Is In-Office Permanent Birth Control?

In-office permanent birth control includes any sterilization procedure that’s done in a doctor’s office. Usually, this is a hysteroscopic sterilization or Essure procedure.

What Exactly Is a Hysteroscopic Sterilization?

A hysteroscopic sterilization is one of the least invasive forms of permanent birth control. During the procedure, a doctor closes off the fallopian tubes. This prevents eggs from going down the tubes and into the uterus, and, thus, sperm can never reach and fertilize an egg.

To block the fallopian tubes, a doctor inserts a small, implantable device into them. The device remains in place on its own and forms a physical barrier that blocks the eggs. Doctors are able to reach the tubes and implant the device through the body’s openings, so they don’t need to make any incisions.

How Long Does an In-Office Permanent Birth Control Procedure Take?

A hysteroscopic sterilization takes between 30 and 60 minutes for the entire procedure including preparation and recovery. Occasionally the procedure cannot be performed due to anatomic abnormalities that prevent access to the tubal openings.

Who Should Consider In-Office Permanent Birth Control?

Any woman who no longer wants pregnancy should consider a hysteroscopic sterilization. A doctor can go over each possible procedure and help patients decide if this is the right birth control solution for them.
