Any surgery that’s performed to treat or alter a woman’s reproductive system is a form of gynecologic surgery. Operations to check or remove tumors in the breasts or uterus, treat infertility problems, and address incontinence issues are all types of gynecologic surgery, as are some forms of permanent birth control.
Women who are considering gynecologic surgery should look for a surgeon who is well respected and highly qualified. To find a respected surgeon, women should check a doctor's reputation online through reviews as well as ask for recommendations. To find a qualified gynecologic surgeon, women should look at a doctor’s credentials.
At the very least, a gynecologic surgeon should be licensed and board-certified. Licensure lets a doctor legally practice medicine, and board certification shows that a doctor has proven their medical knowledge by passing an examination. The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology certifies gynecologic surgeons. The most qualified gynecologic surgeons will be fellows of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. These doctors often have “F.C.A.O.G.” after their name.
Finally, women may also want to look for a gynecologic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopic surgery. Minimally invasive procedures have a lower chance of complications and shorter recovery time than comparable traditional surgeries.
Any woman who has a health issue related to their reproductive system might benefit from gynecologic surgery. Surgery isn’t usually the first treatment option that doctors recommend. When other forms of treatment have failed, surgery is sometimes the best choice.
Additionally, women who don’t want any more children might also be good candidates for gynecologic surgery. Some forms of permanent birth control require minimally invasive or traditional surgery.
A gynecologic surgeon can sit down with any woman who is considering surgery and help her decide whether it’s right for her.
