Teenage Contraception Q & A

What Forms of Teenage Contraception Are Available?

Several forms of contraception are available to teenagers. Some of the most common birth control methods that teenagers can use include:

  • birth control pills
  • intrauterine devices (IUDs)
  • Hormonal implants
  • Condoms

Medication may be administered orally or through a vaginal ring.

Most experts in the field recommend Long Acting Reversible Contraception for teenagers to minimize compliance failures.

Are Birth Control Appointments Confidential?

By law, all medical appointments, prescriptions, and procedures must be kept strictly confidential. In some cases, doctors may ask for permission to share details with other healthcare providers who treat a teenager and with their insurance company. Whether anyone else finds out about a birth control appointment, is strictly up to the teenager who has the appointment. Doctors cannot share any information unless their patients give them permission to do so by signing a release form.

Do Birth Control Measures Stop the Transmission of Sexually Transmitted Infections?

Condoms are the only method to decrease the transmission of Sexually Transmitted Infections.  Other birth control options are used to prevent pregnancy, not STIs

When Should Teenagers See a Doctor About Birth Control?

Teenagers should talk with a doctor about birth control and STIs before they become sexually active. Even if teenagers aren’t sexually active and don’t plan to be, they should discuss contraceptive options with their healthcare provider for personal education.
